        The World Conservation Monitoring Centre provides information services on conservation and sustainable use of the world's living resources, and helps others to develop information systems of their own.

         


        GIS Developer

        Salary range: £20,105 to 33,508

        Recognised worldwide as a source of conservation information, WCMC’s aim is to influence decisions affecting the quality of life of future generations. GIS is key to the work that we do. We have a vacancy in our GIS team for an experienced Visual Basic programmer with a good understanding of the web and GIS is required to help develop a wide range of GIS-based applications to support of WCMC’s scientific programme. WCMC has established a growing range of dynamic maps, together within supporting textual information, on the Internet. This key role is to further enhance the Centre’s ability to deliver more effective WCMC’s substantial data holdings of environmental information to WCMC own staff, our clients and users.

        The successful candidate would :

        • Manage the GIS team and the associated workload to ensure effective execution of GIS projects
        • Execute GIS-based projects for WCMC's clients
        • Manage the relationship with ESRI (UK and in the US)
        • Manage the relationship with spatial data suppliers and build a network of data sources for spatial data
        • Manage and implement data standards and quality control including the associated metadata and best practices
        • Provide training to WCMC staff on GIS issues
        • Support WCMC's capacity building activities to external organisations

         

        And demonstrate the following key skills:

        • Extensive experience of Visual Basic, ideally in a professional software development environment for GIS-orientated applications
        • A good working knowledge and understanding of Javascript and HTML
        • Experience in MapObjects or MapObjects IMS (ESRI's extensions to Visual Basic) or equivalent GIS object-orientated software
        • Experience of developing GIS applications including such techniques as raster modeling and specialist tools such as fragstats to study patch dynamics.
        • Support of others in the development of GIS applications and tools.
